French President Emmanuel Macron has directly responded to US President Donald Trump over the riots in France, calling Trump’s claims “stupid and unacceptable.” Protests over living costs and schools, which turned into looting and riots in Paris and other cities with over 2,400 arrests, were used by Trump to attack immigration. Trump said on Truth Social and in Wichita: “What’s happening in France has to do with immigration, not schools. If you want to see what’s at stake in this election, just look at France: a once great nation that is being conquered, looted and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists and communists.” He urged Macron to “close your borders and take control before it is too late”. Speaking from Qatar during his Gulf tour, Macron hit back: “We’ve seen AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened in France. We’ve had people claiming that we were invaded by hordes of migrants and Islamists, which is completely false.” Macron said there is “foreign manipulation of information” that led to comments from “many people, including foreign leaders”. Asked if he meant Trump, he replied: “Among others.” He added: “All the people who speak ill of our country right now are people who don’t love France. Those people really bother me.” Macron admitted there is “no visible foreign interference in the events,” but accused leaders “on the other side of the Atlantic” of using France for their own election campaigns ahead of the US midterms.
