Outside Milan Cathedral. They attack the police, loot shops, trash the center. Many of them are not Italian. Integration has failed. The images come from the heart of Milan, a few meters from the Duomo. Hundreds of masked youths attack police with stones and fireworks, then turn on the shops. Storefronts smashed, shelves emptied, Decathlon and Foot Locker looted like a war zone. This is not social anger. This is not a protest about the cost of living. It is the failure of integration. Many of those who devastated downtown Milan are not Italian. They were born here, they grew up here, but they don’t feel Italian and they don’t act like Italians. They hate the country that welcomed them. When you see guys climbing the Garibaldi monument to throw a stolen mannequin, stealing a carabiniere’s hat and showing it off on social media, you understand there is no desire to integrate. There is only contempt. Milan is not crying about the cost of living. Milan is crying because it has discovered that for years it has welcomed people who don’t want to integrate, and now that model has exploded in the city’s face. If you don’t say this, you haven’t understood anything about what happened in Piazza Duomo.
